We are a unique running magazine made by runners, for runners. 116 pages of running stories, illustrated features and stunning photography. It’s not how to run, it’s #WhyWeRun.
Running… putting one foot in front of another and getting a new PB. Except if there’s one thing we’ve learned during the past four years of producing Like the Wind, there’s so much more to running that physical achievement. So many of our contributors have shared their stories of how running benefits their brains as well as their bodies and in this issue we wanted to focus on our sport’s impact on mental health. We’ve talked to UKA mental health ambassadors, the amazing Dan Keeley, who ran from Rome to London in order to raise awareness of male mental health conditions and Rachel Cullen, whose searingly honest book shares her journey from body dysmorphia to three-hour marathoner.
As ever, we’re fortunate enough to explore the world through the words and images of our contributors. We’re thrilled to be able to publish an excerpt from mountain queen Emelie Forsberg’s upcoming book, Sky Runner, complete with beautiful Alpine photography from Kilian Jornet. We also travel to Bhutan with a lecturer who ran 600km in order to raise money for Bhutanese kids’ school equipment. Filmmaker Caroline Côté shares the story of her latest project: running 100km across some of Canada’s least hospitable terrain with the descendant of an indigenous Canadian community, while we break new ground with a piece of short fiction, in which writer Sean Kelly paints a vivid picture of the Cornish coast. Closer to home, we run laps of London’s highest track, more than 200ft above Shoreditch, offering stunning views of the capital, especially by night.
Plus, we explore the philosophy of running, meet the man bringing Emil Zatopek to life on stage and examine the growing market for creative and inspiring race mementos – definitely more meaningful than a new PB.
