Run your own story

Issue 47 of Like the Wind celebrates the runners who run because they must – because they can’t imagine not doing it. And the creatives who create because they must, inspired by trail or track, moulding those moments into artwork, poetry, photography, words, ideas. Sometimes a run’s just a run, but there’s much more to running than running.

In our feature story, Jonathan S. Bean investigates a new category of experiential running events: “Running is changing, with more recognition of what some communities have long known: that beyond competition, running can be a vehicle for social connection, adventure and spiritual growth.” And in Creative pursuit, Jaymes Shrimski brings together voices from Manila’s running scene, learning how they use running as fuel for their creative vocations. “Running gives me space to paint my own story as I go, rather than setting a target and running towards it.”

Throughout 130 pages, beautifully illustrated with photography and bespoke commissioned artwork, this issue of Like the Wind champions the spirit of runners who can’t and won’t be stopped. We’ve curated a wealth of stories from around the world and all aspects of running, including track, training, road marathons, and trail – both ultra races and personal quests.

The stories in issue 47 include:

  • The extra salt: Amory Rowe chats with legendary Olympian Deena Kastor.
  • Don’t worry, be happy: Sammy Berryman heads to Tanzania to recce a new staged trail race, and finds a positive shift in mindset.
  • At home in the hills: after moving to Scotland, Emma Padner joins a local run club and begins exploring her new back yard.
  • It’s not the mountain: our creative director Alex Murphy ran UTMB this year. Just don’t ask about the toenails he lost at Vallorcine.
  • City shapes: what if cities were designed with the needs of runners in mind?
  • One of the girls: Adrienne Perron heads out for a run with Team Meridia, a Boulder-based professional track team with a difference.
  • On the edge: rediscovering a cult running movie from the 1980s.
  • The day I didn’t: what happened when Anna Staats broke a seven-year daily running streak.

Running has something for everyone and the stories in LtW#47 reflect that. Whether on the road, track or trail, the stories are captivating, inspiring and thought-provoking. All delivered in a high-quality package that is a pleasure to hold and read.

It’s why we run.
