In spring, we launched Like the Wind USA, a new edition of the magazine you already know and love.
The magazine will keep the heart, craft and storytelling that define Like the Wind, with stories drawn from our global edition, alongside 16 pages of additional US-focused stories and perspectives curated by US editor Adrienne Perron.
The moments we keep
In issue 3 of Like the Wind USA, we turn our attention to the act of remembering — the small rituals that let us hold onto a run long after our shoes come off. Every mile leaves something behind, whether it’s a lesson, an ache or a version of ourselves we don’t want to forget.
In our feature story, USA editor Adrienne Perron explores the practice of run journaling: how the simple act of writing down our miles becomes a way of connecting with ourselves, a record we can lean on in the years ahead, and a means of sitting with and learning from all the hours we’ve spent training. Tony DiPasquale writes and photographs the story of Vivek Gowri, the new owner of San Francisco Running Company, and his vision for making the shop, and the city’s trail running community, a more inclusive, welcoming home for runners of every kind. We also preview Luke McCambley’s (aka The Orange Runner) forthcoming book illustrating every marathoner in New York City, out later this fall. And Sam Robinson looks back on his college cross country days in a raw, reflective essay on the training, the suffering, and the growth that happened “On the Grass.”
With interviews, deep dives alongside fun lighter takes, narrative storytelling as well as journalism, poetry and artwork and images from skilled photographers, Like the Wind is a joyous celebration of global running culture.
The stories in issue 3 include:
- The vulture: Julian Rowberry battles 96% humidity and his own breaking point on the UTMB Amazean Jungle 50K.
- Rocky soup: Carolina Pinheiro reports on the quirky joy of unsanctioned races.
- The trail doesn’t apologise: Kriste Peoples urges women to claim their rightful space outdoors.
- A blank slate: Emily Cameron photographs the vibrant colours and raw emotion of a collegiate track and field meet.
- Le sang d’un poète: a deeply personal story from Shelby Christine Dillingham about love, diabetes, being honest with herself, and signing up for a 100-miler.
- A pretty cool year: Matt Sharkey captures the Western States 100 on 35mm film, embracing creative limitations.
Running has something for everyone and the stories in LtW USA #3 reflect that. Whether on the road, track or trail, the stories are captivating, inspiring and thought-provoking.
