The freedom of running

In issue 48 of Like the Wind, we escape onto the trails, track, roads and into the mountains, searching for freedom. Some find it by running far, some by running fast. Some form communities and break down the barriers to their own freedom. But we’re all looking for it.

Our feature story, A question of scale by Emma Cole, takes a deep dive into how races grow from grassroots to world-class events. In her view, a race’s success is ultimately about emotion: “The passion for racing comes down to how it makes us feel… We are all chasing that human feeling and I hope that never changes.”  And in our curated selection of stories, The rise of 200-milers, we explore the recent growth in ultras that push the edge of endurance to a place where reality breaks down – but it can be intoxicating. As David Bone writes in Lucky 13, “We’d done it – not just the miles, but the madness.”

This 130-page magazine brings together a spellbinding range of stories from our community. Writers, photographers, illustrators – all runners with passion and something to say about why we run. Our stories have global scope, hand-picked to showcase both the variety of contemporary running and the things that unite us all.

The stories in issue 48 include:

  • No distractions: photographer Geoff Lowe on the place where art and sport converge.
  • Between two outs: Christine Reed, committed to a ridgetop mountain run in New Mexico, has a close brush with a storm.
  • The mythical finish line: “In races as in life, we cling to the idea that crossing some arbitrary line will make all the effort it took to get us there worthwhile.”
  • Sprint, sprint… BOOM! Abby Carney looks at the history of recreational sprinting, and asks if more of us should be doing it.
  • A run of one’s own: why women-only safe spaces are vital for women who run.
  • Finding a way back: how Back on My Feet uses running to combat homelessness.
  • Let it go: Shannon Yewell Weil tells a story from the origins of the Western States Endurance Run.

Running has something for everyone and the stories in LtW#48 reflect that. Whether on the road, track or trail, the stories are captivating, inspiring and thought-provoking. All delivered in a high-quality package that is a pleasure to hold and read. Subscribe now to ensure your copy lands directly on your doormat
