The milestones that define us
In this special extended 50th issue of Like the Wind, we take a longer view of the stories that shape us as runners: not only where we’ve come from but also where we’re going. When we launched our first issue, the running world looked very different, and individual motivations shift over time, but some things are universal. Perhaps the fundamental reasons we lace up our shoes will never change.
In our feature story, our co-founder Simon Freeman speaks to major voices in the running world about the past, present and future of running. What are the challenges that lie ahead as our sport grows in popularity? Which moments have defined running culture over the last decade? We also catch up with contributors from our earliest pages – as well as readers both new and long-established – to find out how their own relationship with running has evolved. Meanwhile, Bryce Carlson travels to Bell Buckle, Tennessee, to meet the enigmatic Laz Lake: “But the humans, they communicate, and they talk, and they run it, and they figure it out. And the impossible becomes possible.”
With interviews, deep dives alongside fun lighter takes, narrative storytelling as well as journalism, poetry and artwork and images from skilled photographers, Like the Wind is a joyous celebration of global running culture.
The stories in issue 50 include:
- The vulture: Julian Rowberry battles 96% humidity and his own breaking point on the UTMB Amazean Jungle 50K.
- Rocky soup: Carolina Pinheiro reports on the quirky joy of unsanctioned races.
- The culprit was Alec Keith: on a challenging Scottish hill round, “It is here, amid the tussocks, bog and deer grass, that motivation will most likely fail…”
- The trail doesn’t apologise: Kriste Peoples urges women to claim their rightful space outdoors.
- A blank slate: Emily Cameron photographs the vibrant colours and raw emotion of a collegiate track and field meet.
- Le sang d’un poète: a deeply personal story from Shelby Christine Dillingham about love, diabetes, being honest with herself, and signing up for a 100-miler.
- A pretty cool year: Matt Sharkey captures the Western States 100 on 35mm film, embracing creative limitations.
- The master: Sam Haddad meets Alice Braham, who broke the British Women’s Masters marathon record at age 50.
Running has something for everyone and the stories in LtW#50 reflect that. Whether on the road, track or trail, the stories are captivating, inspiring and thought-provoking.
